The hotter it gets, the greater the challenges for truck drivers and vehicles – The most importantadvice from 24/7 ASSISTANCE at a glance
(Salzburg, July 20, 2023) – There have already been several hot spells in recent weeks. However, the coming weeks are also likely to bring high temperatures of 30 degrees and more. For truck drivers, the warm weather presents numerous challenges. On hot days, it is not only important to keep a cool head, but also to protect the vehicle from damage.
If the weather remains hot for several days, blow-ups are a big danger. They occur within a very short time when the heat causes the road surface to crack and the asphalt to bulge. Blow-ups can be fatal under certain circumstances if the sudden bumps in the road cause a driver to jerk the steering wheel in fright and drift into the adjacent lane or into oncoming traffic. The danger is particularly high on highways that consist primarily of concrete slabs. The current rules are clear: those who drive with foresight, keep sufficient distance and listen to blow-up warnings on the traffic radio increase their safety.
Truck tires are also particularly stressed on hot days. If the thermometer rises above 30 degrees, the asphalt quickly reaches temperatures of up to 60 degrees – this makes tires softer. On such days, it is very important to check the tire pressure regularly before starting out. If it is not correct, the heat will cause tires to lock up faster, overheat and even catch fire.
Hot days, cool heads
Truck drivers do not have an easy job on hot days. In order to be able to manage a longer trip well even under such conditions, it is important for all personnel to get sufficient and good sleep before the upcoming tour so that their ability to concentrate is maintained. As tasty as the schnitzel and fries at the truck stop may be, in hot weather it is better to avoid heavy and fatty meals and prefer to eat a light diet with plenty of fruit, salad and raw vegetables. It is especially important to drink regularly. Clear still water or fruit juice spritzers are optimal on warm days.
It is also important to use the air conditioning correctly: If it is turned up too high, there is a risk of circulatory problems. In general, the air conditioning should never be set lower than six degrees difference to the outside temperature.
Caution is advised in the event of headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness or nausea. In these cases, stop immediately, get into the shade, drink fluids and, in an emergency, call a doctor. On the highway, emergency call boxes provide quick assistance.
